Requirements:
1. PGY-1 Training
A complete neurology residency is 48 months, the first 12 months of which must include a broad clinical experience in general internal medicine. This year must include at least one of the following:
a. 8 months in internal medicine with primary responsibility in patient care or
b. 6 months in internal medicine with primary responsibility in patient care and a period of at least 2 months total time in pediatrics or emergency medicine or both.
Residents must spend no more than 2 months in neurology during this year.
Our program begins at the PGY-2 level. Applicants who have not completed the above requirements must concurrently apply for a preliminary medicine position in internal medicine at an accredited United States training program.
We strongly encourage our applicants to apply to the Preliminary Medicine Program at the University of Connecticut. Also, the Internal Medicine Department offers the Traditional Rotating Internship which satisfies both the AOA and the ACGME requirements for internship (“dually-accredited”) for those with DO degrees.
NOTE: You must apply separately to the Internal Medicine Department through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) only.
This is a separate application, interview, and match process.
2. International Medical Graduates
Our program welcomes International Medical Graduates that hold a valid ECFMG certificate. (This does not apply to Canadian graduates.)
3. Year of Graduation
Medical school graduation should be within 5 years of residency application.
4. Visas: (if applicable)
The University of Connecticut only sponsors the J-1 visa for those candidates who are not permanent residents or US Citizens. The University will NOT sponsor H1b visas.
4. USMLE or COMLEX Scores
USMLE or COMLEX scores of Part I (and II once completed) should be passed on the first attempt. |
